It loosens and clears wax, dirt and the smell that comes with them — then evaporates, and leaves the canal dry and open. That last part does more work than the cleaning does. A warm, damp ear is the one that keeps giving you trouble, and most cleaners leave one behind.
Breeds with floppy ears and hairy canals get the least air to the ear and the most bother with it: cocker spaniels, cockapoos, labradoodles, basset hounds, setters. If you have one, you already know.
What's in it — A Victorian alcohol-based formulation, including Gentian Violet and Boric Acid. The gentian is where the purple comes from, and it's the only difference between this bottle and the Colour Free one. The advantage of the colour is that you can see exactly where the cleaner has been. The trade-off is that it can stain, so use it somewhere you don't mind. If that's a problem — a white coat, a show dog, a cream sofa — buy the Colour Free version instead.
It smells strong, and that's the point — People compare it to methylated spirits. That's the alcohol, and the alcohol is the mechanism: it carries the solution down the canal, then evaporates and takes the damp with it. The smell is gone in a minute or two.
Which size — Most people start with the 150ml. The 50ml is for the car, or a first try. The 500ml is what groomers and multi-dog households buy, and works out at roughly a third of the price per ml of the 50ml. There's no expiry date on any of them, so nothing goes off in the cupboard between flare-ups. Buy the big one once and stop thinking about it.

- Stand the bottle in a cup of warm water for 5 minutes.
- Shake vigorously for 2 minutes before every application.
- Remove the nozzle cap, insert the nozzle in the ear and squeeze until the ear canal is flooded with the solution.
- Gently massage around the ear for 30 to 50 seconds, then let your pet shake its head.
How often: initially twice a day for up to 2 weeks, depending on the severity. Then once a day for the next one to two weeks. For best results, once a month thereafter.

Read the instruction leaflet before use. For external use in the ear only. Do not use on an ear that is bleeding or where the eardrum may be perforated. If your pet is in pain, shaking their head persistently, or you can see discharge or swelling, speak to your vet first.
Staining: the purple version may stain — please use it in appropriate surroundings. The Colour Free version exists precisely to avoid this.

Twice a day for up to two weeks depending on severity, then once a day for another one to two weeks, then once a month thereafter. Warm the bottle in a cup of warm water for five minutes and shake it hard for two minutes before every application — skipping that is the usual reason it underperforms.
It is not formulated to sting a healthy ear. An ear that is already sore or broken is a different matter, and that is a dog who should see a vet before anything goes in the ear.
